RWA hosts the following internship and after school programs for youth this Fall:
AQUA 101
Tuesdays 2:00-4:00PM – 6th to 8th graders
Location: Kappa VI/ Far Rockaway High School Campus
Aqua 101 is a hands on environmental education after school program that allows students to learn about the natural environmental through environmental education, marine science, and stewardship.
Shore Corps
Tuesdays 3:30-6PM – 6th to 12th graders
Location: Marina 59/ Beach Channel Drive @ Beach 59th Street
Aqua 101 is a hands on environmental education and outdoor recreation after school program. Students kayak on Jamaica Bay as they collect data at the oyster garden, take part in shoreline restoration and interact with scientists, biologists, and engineers to protect the environment while improving their own health through outdoor recreation.
Tree Corps Internship Program
Wednesdays 3-6PM – 8th to 12th graders
Location: Firehouse 59/ Rockaway Beach Blvd @ Beach 58th Street
Tree Corps is a job training program for youth to learn horticulture and tree stewardship as part of a community improvement district established by RWA along the Beach 59th St Beach to Bay Corridor. Students for the fall internship program have been selected but students who wish to volunteer for the training program are welcome to attend for community service hours.
Environmental Explorers
Wednesday 4-6PM 6th to 8th graders
NYCHA Ocean Bay Community Center- Beach Channel Drive @ Beach 57th St
This program includes environmental arts, gardening and healthy cooking. Students learn about the environment through a variety of activities led directly at the center.
Urban Planning
Thursdays 3-6PM – 6th to 8th graders
Location: Scholar’s Academy
This program introduces students to the principles of community planning and environmental justice through public planning projects. Students will work on creating sustainable design solutions for vacant lots, street/transportation planning and capital projects to present to professionals and government agencies.
All the programs are free but require parents to complete registration materials, permission slip and health forms.
