RWA leads a number of programs each week with students 6th to 12th grade to raise awareness of the environment. All the programs are free but require parents to complete registration materials, permission slip and health forms for each student to attend.Materials need to be submitted by September 15th to RWA, PO Box 900645, Far Rockaway, NY 11690
AQUA 101
Tuesdays 3-6PM – 6th to 12th graders Starting September 20th
Marina 59/ Beach Channel Drive @ Beach 59th Street
Aqua 101 is a hands on environmental education and outdoor recreation after school program that allows students to learn about the natural environmental through water-based recreation, marine science, and stewardship.Students will kayak on Jamaica Bay as they collect data at the oyster garden, take part in shoreline restoration and interact with scientists, biologists, and engineers to protect the environment while improving their own health by engaging in outdoor recreation.
Urban Planning
3-6PM – 6th to 8th graders
Thursdays at Scholar’s Academy
This program introduces students to the principles of community planning and environmental justice. Students will assist with community outreach, planning workshops, building scale models, and doing research on sustainable design solutions to present to professionals and government agencies to address planning of the Rockaway Peninsula.
Environmental Explorers
Wednesday 4-6PM 6th to 8th graders
NYCHA Ocean Bay Community Center- Beach Channel Drive @ Beach 57th Street
This program includes environmental arts, gardening and healthy cooking. Students learn about the environment through a variety of activities led directly at the center.
