Rockaway Planning Coalition

IMG_6110
Rockaway Planning Coalition is a collective group of local organizations and individuals working together to establish a comprehensive design and management plan for the Rockaway Peninsula. This plan will lay the groundwork for phased capital projects and programs along the Peninsula which will address transportation initiatives, waterfront access, economic development, programming and management strategies.

From the Nassau County Line to the tip of Breezy Point is an 11 mile stretch of land that makes up the Rockaway Peninsula; the longest stretch of public waterfront in the State of New York. This land is protected under the NYC Waterfront Revitalization Plan and Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 to encourage public participation in establishing public programs, education and recreation. Yet the rockaway community has rarely been afforded an opportunity to receive such support by any of the city, state or federal agencies that manage it. Due to lack of funding, there is little consistency along the entire stretch of the Rockaway Peninsula. Issues over lack of lifeguards, public education, and swim/water safety along the waterfront have created concern amongst the community that there is a clear need to establish a plan.

Over the past two years, the coalition has worked with Trust for Public Land and Jonathan Rose & Co to establish a plan with the communities input. To see more on the planning process to date go to www.greaterrockaway.org
