Mayor Bloomberg unveiled his PLANYC 2030 action plan to create more open green spaces and sustainable transportation solutions for New York City through the year 2030.
As part of this initiative it was announced that the Rockaway Peninsula would be receiving $40 million dollars in capital funds to revitalize the waterfront East of Beach 31st street, a project initially developed and proposed by the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance.
This designated park space is only one of eight such projects in the Mayors’s plan for all of NYC and was due in large part to the hard work and determination of hundreds of community members and volunteers who had participated in workshops and beach clean ups off of Beach 29th Street in an effort to raise awareness of the many uses this land could hold.
