Living Classroom-IN SCHOOL

“Living Classroom” Program for K-12 Public Schools
Rockaway Waterfront Alliance provides environmental education programs to students in Far Rockaway Public Schools.

Our “Living classroom” program utilizes the waterfront that surrounds the Rockaway Peninsula by bringing some of the most respected scientists and environmentalists to work with students along the native shoreline just outside their schools. This hands-on approach to learning with nature is one of the most successful means to engage young learners in a positive way with the living systems that support our existence. Last year, over 1500 students from local public schools participated in our workshops.

The Living Classroom Program is available to K-12 schools in the areas of renewable energy, environmental art and shoreline conservation. Through our model, public school classrooms play a definitive role in shaping the policy and/or implementation of environmental programs in Far Rockaway.

Our Living Classroom program is a collaborative effort through partnerships we have made with some of the most respected organizations in New York; offering students the rare opportunity to work with environmental leaders from a variety of fields, to foster an appreciation for the natural shoreline and enable students to explore challenging social and environmental issues.

Sessions are led just outside the schools themselves during the regular school day and are generally an hour in length. Check out our past programs to select a specific topic. Program cost is $5/student. Parent chaperones and classroom teachers are welcome to participate in classroom session.
