LIVING CLASSROOM School Workshops

LIVING CLASSROOM School Workshops

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance provides environmental education programs to students K-12th grade in Rockaway Public Schools.

These workshops utilize the waterfront that surrounds the Rockaway Peninsula. by bringing some of the most respected scientists and environmentalists to work with students along the native shoreline just outside their schools. This hands-on approach to learning with nature is one of the most successful means to engage young learners in a positive way with the living systems that support our existence. Last year, over 1500 students from local public schools participated in our workshops.

The Program is available to K-12 schools in the areas of marine science, gardening/composting, community planning and water safety. Through our model, public school classrooms play a definitive role in shaping the policy and/or implementation of environmental programs in Far Rockaway.

Through a collaborative partnership with some of the most respected organizations in New York we offer schools and students the rare opportunity to work with environmental leaders from a variety of fields; to foster an appreciation for the natural shoreline and enable students to explore challenging social and environmental issues.

Sessions are led just outside the schools themselves during the regular school day and are generally an hour in length. Parent chaperones and classroom teachers are welcome to participate in classroom session.
